Diwali, the «Festival of Lights»

Diwali is the Hindu New Year. It is the biggest and most important festival in India.

Diwali is celebrated for five days. During Diwali People get up very early, but they don´t go to school or work . . On the first day people clean and decorate their houses and gardens with lights. Then they prepare food and drinks for a big party. They don´t eat meet and don´t drink alcohol at those parties.

In the festival they eat vegetarian food. That means they don´t eat meat, chicken or fish. The vegetarian food in the festival is delicious! People also wear new clothes, visit friends and family, hang out with them and give them presents.

During the celebrations, people dance and watch the fireworks and children eat lot of candy and sweet things.

Diwali is a beautiful and fun holiday!
