The Isle Of Dogs

Holaa familia! .. Hoy les traigo una historia sobre una particular e interesante isla. Una pequeña acotación: Recuerden que «Isla» en inglés, se dice «Island» y también «Isle» para que no crean que fue un error de escritura :D… Espero que aprovechen mucho la lectura para practicar el Listening, el Reading y el Speaking! 😉

In the center of London there is an area of dirty old buildings. The name of this area is «The Isle of Dogs». It has a strange and fascinating history.

In the sixteenth century, the kings of the Tudor dynasty, used the island as a home for their dogs. In 1603, the bubonic plague spread from the island to the city of London. Then, in the ninteen -fifties The Isle of Dogs sank into neglect and poverty.

In 1980, the last dock was closed. But in 1986 things changed. A group of American businessmen decided to buy some land on the Isle of Dogs and to build some offices. The project expanded and Canary Wharf was born.

Canary Wharf is an area of 900.000 square metres, with banks, restaurants, shops and a lot of office space. Some of the biggest banks in England now have their offices there, and The Isle of Dogs is becoming an international centre of high finance.
